Eklectica

The challenge
Being an avid collector since childhood, this client decided to turn her passion for antiques and art into a business. She asked us to put a name to her retail store, which would occupy a large warehouse space in a pacific coast city.

This client wanted no association with a junk or hand-me-down theme and did not want to feature antiques in the name, since her merchandise would go beyond vintage items. Knowing she particularly liked the feel of stores such as Restoration Hardware and the look of retail names like Anthropologie, we had some direction in the way we needed to go after completing our initial interview process.

The resolution
The word eclectic immediately came to mind when thinking of this client’s style. Interestingly, this word comes from the Greek eklektikos, which means "to select and gather." Borrowing the k from the Greek root and adding an a to the end of the word eclectic brought a new creation in Eklectica, a business name that was a perfect fit for a woman seeking to start an antiques and collectible emporium.

Our graphics designer brought variety to the visual through Roman capitals displayed in various hues, and an old-fashioned frame around the type speaks of a vintage yet modern look.

I could not have asked for a better name to represent who I am professionally. I never wanted to be just an antique store; an emporium is another story. Thank you for assisting me in the creation of my wonderful business name! — D.M., Oregon
